Nathalie brought us to her Nutrition Market Tour last Saturday. It was an eye-opening journey into how practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine consider the health profiles of various foods to maintain bodily health. Rather fittingly she started with the root vegetables and built from there. Yams section in particular she explained were useful for adjusting hormones while pumpkin series have an effect on blood sugar. She then explained how leafy greens were important when considering calcium and iron levels in our blood. With regard to fruit, Nathalie explained how they should be eaten seasonally and cook sometimes to off-set the all-too-frequent reality of long-distance shipping which mitigates freshness. Breads we learned had to be bought keeping in mind constant rotation through the various types of grains in order to achieve the full-spectrum of nutrients in stead of only stay with one specific kind since it is "so good". As for meats, Nathalie extolled the benefits of seafood and shellfish. Beef too she explained also has a place in a healthy diet when it is consumed with respect to an individual's health conditions and certain illness. The section on tea I found the most enjoyable. Nathalie showed us the nuanced aspects of various teas, how and when to drink them, and how to select the right teas for our own health. We were all very happy to end the ice cream section. Treats we learned, in moderation, are an important part of a healthy diet. Everything has a place. One hour sped by very quickly and I felt enriched by the end of it. I would recommend anyone go on one of Nathalie's tours if they are serious about eating better.
